about this gallery

Welcome to the ANAM Ancient Roman Gallery. This gallery is devoted to the ancient numismatic art and coinage of both Republican Rome and Imperial Rome. This gallery combines into one Roman era the coins from 225 BC, following Rome’s victory over Carthage after the first Punic War, through to the early sixth century following the deaths of Anastasius and Justin. Roman coin types are characterizes by the standard silver quinarius, denarius, gold aureus and bronze sestertius, with multiples therein. Republican coins were usually anonymous issues or issued by moneyors and depict Roman gods and goddesses. A slow coinage transition evolved during the time of Julius Caesar to begin depicting the individual features, through highly realistic portraiture, of each Imperial Roman Emperor. Imperial Roman coins are also known for there latin legends stating the Emperor’s name, or an abbreviated portion of the name, along with the various titles indicating the Emperor’s civil and military distinctions. Characteristic of Imperial Roman coins are the legends, AUG for Augustus, and CAES for Caesar, IMP for Imperator and SC for Senatus Consultus.
